GAPscape - TIME / Sixth Era

GAPscape TIME / Sixth Era explores time as a living substance and the responsibility of the individual within contemporary society. Through the metaphor of stylized beehives and the use of heterogeneous materials such as fresh raspberries, natural pigments and plexiglas, the work makes visible processes of transformation, decay and permanence.

The title GAPscape TIME refers to the act of looking beyond the surface, bridging the dialogue between artistic concept and technical approach. TIME / Sixth Era on the other hand, symbolically refers to a new geological era, Anthropocene, in which the planet’s transformations are caused primarily by human action.

Natural pigments and fresh raspberries, as they dry, leave permanent traces on canvas or plexiglas, making the passage of time visible. Through the degradation of the raspberries — symbols of fertility and abundance — matter transforms, generating a sense of fragility and transience.

The intention is to capture time, by making life and art coincide. During the decomposition and fermentation of the raspberries, the olfactory impact and the intense red colour invite the audience to an active mental participation in completing the work.
The artistic intervention transforms the ephemeral into the permanent, capturing the instant and the unpredictability of human gesture. The work thus assumes a political and philosophical dimension, offering a reflection on the relationship between contemporary society, nature and technology.

Today we tend to regard technology as a tool at our disposal, whereas it has become the very environment that surrounds us. Human beings have left traces everywhere in nature: environmental pollution, climate change, epidemics, military conflicts and human and animal migrations are not isolated events but — like the “butterfly effect” — interconnected manifestations within complex social, economic and political dynamics.
